Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist
NCBA CLUSA is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist for an upcoming agricultural program in Malawi. S/he will lead the development of a Gender and Social Inclusion Strategy to guide the program’s efforts in producer organization (PO) capacity building and the commercialization of agriculture. S/he will be experienced in developing gender strategies for PO development and POs accessing markets, finance, and agriculture extension in Malawi. S/he will also have previously supported POs in engaging women, youth and marginalized individuals. This program will emphasize a Learning and Adapting approach. The candidate should be knowledgeable in smallholder agriculture, inclusive economic growth models, and gender indicators, data collection, and M&E and supporting a learning agenda, in addition to being an experienced trainer and gender specialist. The position will be based in Blantyre.
ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Collaborate with program leadership, M&E and technical staff to ensure that gender is integrated into the program across design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation through a Gender and Social Inclusion Strategy;
- Coordinate with program staff on the selection of Emerging Farmers as well as POs to invite to participate in the program that are willing and interested in social inclusion strategies for their businesses;
- Design and deliver training sessions on gender-awareness, organizational gender policies, and relevance of gender to programmatic components;
- Work with technical/sector-specific staff, focused on producer organizations (POs), agribusiness, finance, and agriculture extension, to support formal trainings, informal sessions and manuals with a gender lens;
- In coordination with technical staff, identify and strengthen women and youth-led POs and their ability to integrate into value chains;
- Support the design and implementation of PO business plans that address gender equality and social inclusion (including engaging women, youth and marginalized individuals);
- Provide input on the design of PO assessments, market analysis, financial analysis and business plans so they address inequitable access, gender roles, and relationships in production, service provision, input supply, trading, processing, extension and marketing of agriculture;
- Train staff on gendered market analysis and gender-sensitive approaches to PO capacity building (i.e. accessing markets, finance and agriculture extension);
- Conduct site visits to gain knowledge of potential constraints for marginalized groups and better support and monitor gender integration;
- In coordination with M&E team, support the development of gender indicators and consistent use of sex-disaggregated data reporting;
- Work with the program staff on interpreting results and presenting findings, recommendations, and lessons learned for publications, quarterly reports, program events/workshops, and when responding to periodic NCBA CLUSA HQ or donor requests.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience with donor funded agriculture programs and 5 years’ experience in gender programming;
- Demonstrated understanding of gender equality, equity, gender integration, women’s empowerment, and engaging men as agents of change;
- Strong experience in assessing gender dynamics and supporting gender integration in producer organizations and agriculture value chains in rural Malawi;
- Experience in supporting women participating in commercialized production of agriculture and empowering them through markets, finance and extension services;
- Experience in designing gendered market assessments and interventions that reduce gender gaps, with emphasis on resource mobilization for women (loans/grants) and supporting women in leadership positions in POs or as Emerging Farmers;
- Experience in designing and implementing culturally-sensitive approaches to women’s economic empowerment, recognizing cultural norms while simultaneously seeking to overcome the barriers that exist;
- Experience in working directly with agriculture input suppliers, buyers and/or financial institutions preferred;
- Ability to work with people and willingness to support and train others;
- Very high degree of social, political and cultural sensitivity;
- Reporting writing and data analysis skills;
- Strong written/oral communication;
- Ability to travel to project sites nationwide.
