Vice President, Cooperative Relations
SCOPE AND PURPOSE:
As part of a team that is seeking to ensure cooperatives make a deeper impact in building a better world and a more inclusive economy, this position provides leadership for a strategic organizational priority. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President of Cooperative Relations position focuses on leading NCBA CLUSA’s effort to deepen the impact of cooperatives in building a more inclusive economy and increasing the credibility of the cooperative business model. The primary responsibility of the VPCR is to provide the vision and leadership necessary to promote and support the core business strategy and mission in three areas:
- To significantly increase revenues from diverse sources and develop and implement strategies to increase and retain members.
- To lead the work of the association in becoming a thought leader in promoting the economic and social impact of cooperatives in the U.S. and globally, including supporting the work of the Council of Cooperative Economists.
- To lead the work and develop strategies to elevate the cooperative business model as the primary driver of a more inclusive economy.
ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Oversee membership and develop a strategic campaign to significantly increase, promote, and retain NCBA CLUSA’s membership across the diverse cooperative sectors and develop collaborative relationships to ensure that the campaigns increase valued-added benefits for members and reflect members’ needs and regional or geographic realities.
- Fully understand the membership growth opportunities, including membership data tracking, and develop strategies to capture the opportunities.
- In collaboration with the Cooperative Development Foundation (CDF) Executive Director, develop a stakeholder outreach strategy to identify potential funders and development partners.
- Implement Inclusive Economy Initiatives and its activities in accordance with the vision, mission and goals of NCBA CLUSA by cultivating, maintaining and managing professional relationships and partnerships with key external stakeholders who have shared interests in creating an inclusive economy in the U.S. and internationally.
- Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the Inclusive Economy initiative and identify areas for improvement; closely monitor the progress of this effort and prepare periodic reports for the President and Board.
- In collaboration with the senior leadership team and the Cooperative Development Foundation, develop and cultivate strategic partnerships that can advance the Inclusive Economy initiative.
- Lead the work of the Council of Cooperative Economists (CCE) in their efforts to promote and increase the credibility of the cooperative business model as viable and essential strategy to creating an inclusive economy.
- Lead the thought leadership agenda by creating and developing content and products (publications, events, etc.) that increases the visibility and credibility of cooperatives and their role in building a more inclusive economy across the world; manage projects that further the goals of the inclusive economy initiative, including deliverables such as reports, data analysis and visualization products, mapping tools, and convenings.
- Works with Communications and Public Relations to create and implement a branding strategy based on the thought leadership products through the development of narratives, messaging, analytics, knowledge management products, distribution, outreach and key performance indicators.
- Work collaboratively with the Communications Team to recruit writers and create content for the Cooperative Business Journal and other products, produce the annual report and identify and generate items for publication both within and external to the cooperative community.
- Recruit participants and create content for NCBA CLUSA-sponsored events, such as the Cooperative IMPACT conference, convenings, webinars, etc.
- In coordination with the Vice President for Advocacy and the Senior Leadership Team, support a robust policy agenda to advance and defend cooperatives, including white papers, testimony and other such advocacy materials for sophisticated audiences at the state, federal and international levels.
- Participate in high-level, long-range planning and policy discussions internally and with stakeholder groups to foster broad understanding of the strategic drivers of NCBA CLUSA’s engagement and policy issues in accordance with the mission of NCBA CLUSA.
- Monitor electronic and print media, special reports, studies, and other information sources relevant to the inclusive economy initiative to keep abreast of relevant trends and issues that allow NCBA CLUSA to maintain a competitive edge and a clear voice on the issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES
- A Master’s degree, preferably in Public Policy, Public Administration, Economics, or Business Administration with proven extensive experience in public policy and community economic development. Proven experience in cooperative development and/or policy, strongly preferred.
- 10 years’ experience working in community economic development (domestic or international), policy analysis, legislative/regulatory process or other relevant settings preferred.
- 10 years’ experience and a successful record of implementing strategies to increase revenue with business development, corporate sponsorships, and from the philanthropic sector.
- Extensive experience in media engagement (print, radio and TV) serving as a spokesperson with a variety of audiences. Also, proven experience in creating narratives, talking points, messaging, convenings, distribution plans, outreach and key performance indicators of content products and branding campaigns.
- Extensive track record building partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, working with C-level executives (government and private sector), and organizing high-level networks and convenings.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize materials and produce well-written reports.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in English; strong writing and proofreading a must. Fluency in Spanish desirable.
- Demonstrated characteristics: ethical and self-motivated, strong interpersonal skills, positive attitude, organizational skills, and team player.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities under time constraints.
- Ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
- Microsoft Office skills.
- Fluency in English required.
