In a vibrant celebration of community and collaboration, NCBA CLUSA member Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op (TPSS) was honored with the Cooperative Innovation/Achievement Award at the recent CCMA Conference. This recognition highlights the co-op’s commitment to innovative solutions and its integral role in the grocery sector, so a few of our NCBA CLUSA staff members had to check it out.
For those unfamiliar with the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op, it prides itself on being a natural food cooperative business owned by friends and neighbors just north of Washington, DC. Their mission is to ensure that customers have access to goods produced in socially and environmentally responsible ways, with an emphasis on local and organic foods, at reasonable prices and in a welcoming community marketplace setting.
Upon entering Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op, visitors are greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors from fresh fruits and vegetables, creating an inviting atmosphere. The store layout is both spacious and organized, with friendly staff ready to assist and share their knowledge. The warm ambiance fosters a sense of community, making this experience feel personal.
The Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op earned the Cooperative Innovation/Achievement Award for their ability to adapt and innovate in the face of challenges. Their creative approach to operating under a tent during their store renovation last year demonstrated a keen understanding of the complexities and urgency faced by cooperatives today. This innovative solution not only ensured continued service to their members, but also reinforced their commitment to cooperative principles. By addressing these pressing issues with creativity and resilience, Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op exemplified the core values of cooperation, ultimately leading to measurable improvements that resonate deeply within their community and beyond.

Winning the Cooperative Innovation/Achievement Award was a moment of joy for the entire team. General Manager Mike Houston recounted the experience: “When we won the award at CCMA, we were absolutely thrilled. The tent operation was not easy, but it was an innovative solution to a challenging situation. Everyone—our members, our staff, our board—had a hand in making that successful.”
This recognition not only celebrates Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op’s achievements, but also puts on display how cooperatives innovate and thrive amid adversity. The cooperative business model brings unique value that can lead to meaningful change and community empowerment.
Mike expressed his enthusiasm for the cooperative model: “I just adore the cooperative model. I can talk to my counterpart at any co-op in the country. People were incredibly helpful during the course of the project with design, during construction, and answering questions.”
Join us in celebrating the Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op and its commitment to cooperative principles, community enrichment and innovative solutions that inspire us all!
