Impact Spotlight – Mozambique
NCBA CLUSA was one of the first international non-governmental organizations that focused on market-oriented development in Mozambique. We pioneered market-linked producer organizations to aid farmers and give them more access to input and output markets. We also helped organizations become legal cooperatives under the country’s new cooperative law.
Our impact in Mozambique is far-reaching. Since 1995, NCBA CLUSA has been empowering numerous Mozambicans, including our staff, our partners’ employees, government officials and most importantly, members and leaders from producer organizations and small agribusinesses who have remained essential in rural markets.
NCBA CLUSA has a long history and experience aiding groups in Mozambique through co-op advocacy. Some of our work includes:
- Helped farmers form formal groups.
- Helped create a legal framework for cooperatives in Mozambique. In 2010 the new co-op law came into effect and is one of the most modern co-op laws in the world.
- Strengthened producer groups to improve food security and nutrition.
- Helped develop farmers’ resilience to climate change through the adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices.
