Impact Spotlight – Mozambique

NCBA CLUSA was one of the first international non-governmental organizations that focused on market-oriented development in Mozambique. We pioneered market-linked producer organizations to aid farmers and give them more access to input and output markets. We also helped organizations become legal cooperatives under the country’s new cooperative law.

Our impact in Mozambique is far-reaching. Since 1995, NCBA CLUSA has been empowering numerous Mozambicans, including our staff, our partners’ employees, government officials and most importantly, members and leaders from producer organizations and small agribusinesses who have remained essential in rural markets.

NCBA CLUSA has a long history and experience aiding groups in Mozambique through co-op advocacy. Some of our work includes:

  • Helped farmers form formal groups.
  • Helped create a legal framework for cooperatives in Mozambique. In 2010 the new co-op law came into effect and is one of the most modern co-op laws in the world.
  • Strengthened producer groups to improve food security and nutrition.
  • Helped develop farmers’ resilience to climate change through the adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices.

Impact Spotlight – REGIS-ER

The Resilience and Economic Growth in the Sahel-Enhanced Resilience (REGIS-ER) project operated from November 2013 to December 2020.

For seven years, REGIS-ER focused on tackling the underlying issues contributing to ongoing vulnerabilities in Niger and Burkina Faso. By working closely with local communities, REGIS-ER implemented initiatives centered around natural resource management, sustainable livelihoods, nutrition and governance. These initiatives aimed to strengthen the resilience and ability of households and communities to manage and rebound from repeated crises.

The project focused on three main components:

  • Promoting sustainable livelihoods: NCBA CLUSA was able to better livelihoods by creating agricultural and animal production opportunities, marketing opportunities and access to financial services.
  • Strengthening governance: Efforts to improve governance involved strategic planning, effective management of natural resources and land use, developing regional capabilities and effective management of disaster and conflict risks.
  • Improving health and nutrition: Initiatives to improve health and nutrition included access to safe drinking water, promoting nutritious local food consumption and gardening, capacity development of health workers and constructing latrines and wells.

REGIS-ER showed what’s possible when community members cooperate to develop self-reliance and solve challenges. The project had a far-reaching effect as 110,750 could increase their resiliency to climate change, 70,513 hectares were managed under improved management systems and 143,859 children younger than five years benefited from nutrition programs.
