This week, Vernon welcomes Peter Dean, Director of National Services at the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB), and Andrew Reicher, Senior Advisor at UHAB, joined by special guest Danielle Bundrock, Cooperative Housing Director at NeighborWorks Montana. Vernon and his guests will discuss UHAB’s National Incubator for Permanently Affordable Co-op Homeownership and how it is helping organizations expand affordable cooperative housing across the country.
Peter Dean leads UHAB’s National Incubator, a nationally recognized program with more than 100 alumni and participating organizations working to develop and sustain permanently affordable cooperative homeownership. His nearly 50-year career in cooperative development has included housing initiatives in Milwaukee, Baltimore, Denver and Central America; and leadership in affordable housing preservation and development nationwide.
Andrew Reicher served as Executive Director of UHAB for more than four decades, helping grow the organization from several dozen tenant-owned buildings to more than 1,300 permanently affordable housing cooperatives serving over 30,000 households. A 2021 Cooperative Hall of Fame inductee, he continues to advance cooperative housing through UHAB National and his service on numerous community development organizations.
Danielle Bundrock, Cooperative Housing Director at NeighborWorks Montana and a graduate of UHAB’s National Incubator, will share how the program has strengthened her work developing cooperative housing opportunities in Montana.
The National Incubator is a four-month professional development program combining live online instruction, an independent community-based project, and an intensive in-person learning experience in New York. Designed for nonprofit developers, community land trusts, cooperative developers and housing practitioners, the program equips participants with practical tools to create, preserve and sustain permanently affordable housing cooperatives in their own communities.
