O’Brien, who has served on the ICA Board since 2024, was among 15 at-large directors elected by ICA members for the 2026-2030 term. The election continues U.S. representation on the board of the global organization representing the cooperative movement.
“The members of ICA have chosen to look to the U.S. cooperative community to continue to help lead the global cooperative movement,” O’Brien said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Board of ICA for the next four-year term.”
“Across the globe, people are looking for economic institutions they can trust—institutions that give them a meaningful voice, strengthen their communities and create opportunity. Cooperatives can meet that need,” O’Brien said in his candidate statement. “The ICA plays a vital role in helping the world understand and act on that potential.”
Yesterday’s election also saw the unanimous reelection of Dr. Ariel Guarco as president of the International Cooperative Alliance. Guarco was first elected president at the 2017 General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In total, 116 voters representing 193 ICA members from 66 countries participated in the election.
