In a time of economic uncertainty and corporate consolidation, the cooperative model offers a powerful lifeline for small businesses. In a new opinion piece for Real Clear Markets, Gina Schaefer explains how Ace Hardware’s co-op structure supports local ownership, reinvests in communities and builds resilience—while remaining competitive with big national brands.

Unlike traditional franchises, Ace stores are independently owned and collectively benefit from shared services, centralized purchasing and national brand recognition.

The cooperative model empowers small businesses with the tools and infrastructure typically reserved for large corporations, while still preserving local autonomy and economic impact.
