This week, Everything Co-op continues its observance of the International Year of the Woman Farmer with with distinguished guest Tanya Denise Fields, Executive Director and President of the Black Feminist Project, established in 2009 to address systemic inequities impacting women in marginalized communities.
Inspired by her lived experience as a single working mother, she has dedicated her career to advancing economic justice, food access and community empowerment.
Tanya’s work has been featured in major media outlets, including the New York Times and MSNBC, and she is widely recognized as a dynamic public speaker and educator. She has delivered keynote addresses and led workshops at conferences and institutions across the country, including Just Food, CUNY and NOFA-NY.
Before founding the Black Feminist Project, she worked with leading environmental justice groups in the South Bronx. A graduate of Baruch College, Tanya is also a cultural influencer and creator of “Mama Tanya’s Kitchen,” where she shares accessible, healthy cooking with humor and creativity.
The Black Feminist Project offers programs such as:
- Black Joy Farm, where folks not only grow food but have a place where they can be themselves. The farm has grown hundreds of pounds of food, hosted about 100 summer youth employees and has hosted many community events.
- Corona Relief Food Box, a biweekly food pantry program that provides free and sliding-scale food for people in The Bronx.
- Sis, Do You! hosts virtual workshops on topics such as self-care, money, and sexual and reproductive health.
