Telling the credit union story—and the broader cooperative story—is a key part of successful advocacy.

Scott Simpson, who will take over as America’s Credit Unions President/CEO in November, says advocacy and unity across the credit union movement are his top priorities in his new role. Simpson, currently president/CEO of the California Credit Union League and Nevada’s Credit Unions and CEO of Utah’s Credit Unions, brings more than two decades in the credit union system and earlier experience on Capitol Hill.

In an interview with CU Daily, Simpson said his background in both politics and the credit union industry positions him to “bridge the space between lawmaking, public policy, electoral politics and a pretty long career in the credit union space.”

He emphasized that effective advocacy requires “finesse” in today’s polarized environment and pledged to represent credit unions of all sizes while amplifying their untold success stories.

Simpson expressed optimism that collaboration among leagues, credit unions and America’s Credit Unions as the national association will strengthen the system.

When discussing what his priorities are as he begins his tenure at America’s Credit Unions, he noted that advocacy remains at the top of the list.

“What I absolutely heard [from the America’s Credit Unions Board] and I knew I would hear, is that advocacy is the number one priority along with keeping the family together. And keeping the family together requires making sure that everybody’s needs are met by their national association. That’s the trick.”
