NCBA welcomes new and returning food co-ops during our P6 Membership Surge

The National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) is excited to welcome seven new and returning food co-ops to our vibrant and growing lineup of members building a stronger, more resilient economy.

The food co-ops below became members through our P6 Membership Surge, an opportunity for cooperatives that are already members of a national or state association, or a federated co-op, to double their impact by joining our national network. As existing members of National Co+op Grocers, the co-ops below were eligible for this exclusive offer.

Belfast Community Food Co-op

Located in the heart of downtown Belfast, Belfast Community Co-op has been bringing locally-sourced, affordable, organic and natural food to Midcoast Maine since 1976.

In 2022, the co-op (formerly Belfast Food Co-op) rebranded itself as Belfast Community Co-op to help people understand that the store is community-owned and open to everyone, adding the tagline “Owned by you. Food for all.” In 2024, Belfast hosted a welcome back party after completing a major renovation project that included an expansion of its café. Today, Belfast counts more than 5,000 owners—including more than 500 new owners in the past year alone—and $11 million in sales.

 

 

East End Food Co-op

For over 40 years, residents of Pittsburgh have trusted East End Food Co-op as their source for high-quality, nourishing food.

East End sources its produce, meat and cheese from small family farms, all located within 250 miles of the co-op. As a sustainable, member-owned business, East End is building an ethical and resilient food infrastructure and a vibrant, dynamic community of happy, healthy people. In 2022, East End celebrating the milestone of growing to 16,000 member-owners. And in 2023, Sustainable Pittsburgh recognized the co-op’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable food.

 

 

Friendly City Food Co-op

Since June 2011, Friendly City Food Co-op in Harrisonburg, Va. has provided access to fresh and locally-sourced food. The co-op works to ensure that the Shenandoah Valley has a vibrant, local economy; fair and friendly relationships; healthy, informed consumers and producers; and a healthy environment.

Since 2016, the co-op’s 99¢ Table has been a favorite way to enjoy fresh, local produce at an unbeatable price, selling more than 300,000 pounds of produce over the years. In 2024, the co-op reached 3,000+ members and counting, and proudly partnered with 177 local producers.

 

 

Marquette Food Co-op

Marquette Food Co-op is Marquette, Mich.’s only full-service natural and organic community-owned grocery. Owned by more than 6,000 households, the co-op has been serving Marquette and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula since 1971.

Marquette Food Co-op not only provides access to organic, local and fairly-traded food and products; but also hosts farm tours, cooking classes and educational workshops about food and environmental issues that foster a thriving, equitable and resilient community. Through its partnership with the UP Food Exchange, Marquette Food Co-op offers a Farm-to-School Fundraiser program that allows schools and youth groups to raise money by selling locally-grown and produced food and craft items.

The co-op counted $14 million in sales in 2024; it spent $4.3 million on local goods, services and supplies

 

Menomonie Food Co-op

Menomonie Market Food Co-op with locations in Menomonie and Eau Claire, Wisc. was started in 1974 by a small group of residents as a food buying club with one goal: creating access to good food. Since then, more than 5,000 people have invested in the co-op by becoming owners. Over 50+ years, the co-op has built a legacy of community leadership, staying power and innovation.

Because Menomonie Market Food Co-op was built by the community, the co-op turns its profits into meaningful support for local organizations in the Chippewa Valley and surrounding areas. In 2018, it launched the Menomonie Market Cooperative Community Fund (MMCCF). MMCCF is now part of the Twin Pines Community Fund, which leverages $40 million for co-op development.

 

Sioux Falls Food Co-op

The Sioux Falls Food Co-op works to create a vibrant community where everyone has access to sustainable, healthy and fairly-traded products. That community champions the cooperative business model, is better educated about food and social responsibility, supports and strengthens the local economy, and enjoys a higher quality of life.

Every Wednesday, Sioux Falls hosts a $5 community dinner open to the public for dine in or carry out. In 2023, the program served 7,000 people. The co-op’s Big Change program invites customers to round up their purchases, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to support local nonprofits.

 

 

Three Rivers Food Co-op

Three Rivers Food Co-op was founded in the early 1970s as a natural foods buying club with over 200 members who ordered food monthly and, in 1976, opened a storefront in downtown Fort Wayne, Ind. The co-op’s current store boasts 6,300 square feet, including a kitchen and eat-in deli and café.

Three Rivers Food Co-op participates in National Co+op Grocers’ Co+op Explorers program, which promotes healthy eating for kids and works to create a more engaging and fun shopping experience for both parents and kids.
