Kicking off the Don’t Tax My Credit Union Week of Action, America’s Credit Unions delivered an open letter to Congress signed by more than 750 credit union CEOs. It thanks lawmakers for keeping the tax status secure so far and urges them to ensure no language harmful to credit unions is added.
“For over 90 years credit unions have helped working Americans and those outside of the mainstream financial system grow and prosper, strengthening communities and our country,” the letter says. “We ask that you let us continue this critical work by preserving the tax status that credit unions have used to help working Americans. We serve the very same men and women you serve. There is a credit union in every single district across our great nation.”
America’s Credit Unions is sending daily messages to Senators, reinforcing how the tax status supports the positive impact credit unions make in the lives of more than 142 million Americans.
While the Senate Finance Committee’s early draft of its reconciliation language secures the credit union tax status, the complete bill text is expected in the coming days. The Senate is aiming to vote on the bill by their July 4 recess. The Don’t Tax My Credit Union Week of Action, a focused grassroots outreach effort, keeps the credit union difference top of mind as the reconciliation package goes into its final stages in the Senate.
