Welcoming the next generation of co-op champions into the workforce

National Interns Day, observed on the last Thursday of July, celebrates the invaluable contributions of interns in the workplace, including at cooperatives. Internships provide emerging professionals with a unique opportunity to gain practical experience, bridge the gap between academia and the workforce, and set a solid foundation for their future careers. In this blog, we will explore why internships are important for incoming working professionals and highlight how NCBA CLUSA is committed to welcoming the next generation of cooperative champions into the workforce.

Internships serve as a low-stakes platform for students to gain real-world experience in a professional environment. They offer a bridge that connects theoretical knowledge gained in their coursework with practical experience in the workplace. Through internships, students can discover the nuances of professional work and acquire vital skills that will benefit them in their future careers.

Internships, such as those offered by NCBA CLUSA, provide a transformative period of professional growth and development. By immersing themselves in the cooperative business model and the values that underpin it, interns have the opportunity to align their values with the organization’s mission. This alignment allows interns to take pride in their contributions and fosters a sense of purpose in their work.

NCBA CLUSA’s Commitment to the Next Generation:

At NCBA CLUSA, the commitment to welcoming the next generation of cooperative champions into the workforce is unwavering. The organization recognizes the importance of providing internships that offer meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for growth.

Kelly Whalen, our Business Development intern joined NCBA CLUSA in the summer of 2023 and since then feels interning has influenced the trajectory of her career path. “I was afforded the opportunity to learn about the field of international development that I initially did not have much knowledge about. I am thrilled to be interning at NCBA CLUSA again this summer to develop my skills further and gain valuable knowledge for my future. I believe that internships are a great stepping stone for professional and personal growth.”

Yaneidy Lora, Coordinator of Membership and Sponsorship at NCBA CLUSA, came on board as an intern before transitioning into her current role. “During my time as a membership intern at NCBA CLUSA, I experienced a transformative period of professional growth and development. This internship provided a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the cooperative business model and the values that underpin it,” Lora said.

“I really enjoyed the close communication and collaboration with my colleagues…The knowledge and experience I gained during this period not only prepared me for future challenges but also solidified my decision to remain with an organization whose mission and values I deeply respect and support,” she added.

George Hammer, NCBA CLUSA’s current Membership and Sponsorship Intern, joined the association in early July. “Internships are one of the best ways to prepare students to enter the workforce and help bridge the gap between what you learn in school to how you apply that learning at work,” Hammer said.

“Each of my internships has made me more comfortable in a professional setting and has given me an understanding of how to communicate, navigate, and work effectively in a professional environment. I consider these experiences invaluable, and I know I will rely on them deeply when it is my time to make the transition from student to professional,” he added. There is no denying internships play a crucial role in preparing students for the professional world! They offer a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience, develop essential skills, and align their values with an organization’s mission. As we celebrate National Interns Day, let’s recognize the significant impact internships have on the journey from student to professional and continue to support and encourage internships as a valuable avenue for growth and development.
