NCBA CLUSA congratulates Alex Serrano, Vice President of Program Development and Technical Services, on his InsideNGO Operational Excellence award! Serrano is the recipient of the 2015 Practitioner Excellence Award for Cross Operations—a recognition spanning multiple operational areas.

Serrano was nominated and selected not only for his work leading the business development team, but also for working across departments and sectors, including stepping in to lead NCBA CLUSA’s Mozambique program during a transition period. In 2014, Serrano oversaw an increase in NCBA CLUSA’s operational budget of 18 percent and has an impressive 60 percent win rate on submitted proposals.

“It is an honor to be a part of this community, which is growing,” Serrano said during his acceptance speech. Serrano’s employment with NCBA CLUSA began with his work in Sao Tome and Principe. He later moved to Mozambique, and is currently at headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he has worked for the past seven years.

“This is a terrific opportunity to recognize people who don’t often get recognized…, who do a lot of work behind the scenes,” said Jim Sailor, InsideNGO’s Chairman of the Board.

These awards recognize the hard work of people who would normally be labeled as overhead, said Jacob Harold, CEO of Guidestar, who spoke during the ceremony. He noted it was “time to rebrand”—operations are not overhead, he said, but needed infrastructure to do good work in communities around the world efficiently and effectively.
