Workers Become Owners at Childcare Center in Queens, New York

    Subscribe

Thirty-four years ago, when Linda and Gregory Coles couldn’t find adequate childcare in their Queens, New York neighborhood, they founded A Child’s Place in a converted basement. Now, the couple has decided to sell their business to its employees—the people they believe can best carry on the daycare center’s legacy.

Through technical and financial assistance, The Working World is supporting A Child’s Place as the business transitions to a worker-owned cooperative. Learn more about this process in the video below, including why worker co-op transitions are critical to retaining vital services and jobs in communities nationwide.

This video first appeared in the December newsletter from Workers to Owners, a national collaborative convened by the Democracy at Work Institute to bring worker ownership to scale through conversions of existing businesses.
